Generative AI Policies

Introduction

Andromeda: Journal of Sharia Management and Business recognizes the potential of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and Claude to assist the research and writing process, including idea development, language improvement, and writing efficiency. However, the use of these tools also carries risks that must be considered, such as inaccuracy or bias (hallucination), lack of proper attribution to sources, and risks related to confidentiality and intellectual property.

This policy is developed with reference to common scholarly publishing guidelines on the use of generative AI in manuscript preparation.

Provisions for Authors

  1. Permitted uses Authors may use generative AI tools to assist with:
    • Grammar and readability improvement of the manuscript
    • Exploration and development of initial ideas
    • Literature or reference searches
    • Assistance with code/programming (where relevant)
  2. Author responsibility
    Authors remain fully responsible for the originality, accuracy, and integrity of the entire manuscript, including any parts assisted by AI. All AI-generated output must be reviewed and verified for accuracy before use.
  3. Disclosure requirement
    Any use of generative AI in preparing the manuscript must be explicitly disclosed in the Methods or Acknowledgements section, including:
    • The name and version of the AI tool used
    • The part(s) of the manuscript it assisted with
    • The purpose of its use
  4. AI cannot be credited as an author
    Generative AI tools cannot be listed as an author, as they cannot take responsibility for the content or for copyright and publication ethics.
  5. Prohibition on data and images
    Generative AI is prohibited from being used to create or manipulate images, charts, data tables, or original research data included in the manuscript.
  6. Practices to avoid
    • Generating text or data automatically without thorough revision and verification
    • Using synthetic data to fill in missing data without a clear methodology
    • Including inaccurate content, including in the abstract or supplementary materials

Violations of the above provisions may be subject to editorial investigation. This policy may be updated periodically in line with developments in AI technology and research ethics standards.
